UNESCO-Iran held a Joint Celebration of Intangible Cultural Heritage

On March 16, 2025, the UNESCO Tehran Office and the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO held a joint event at the Parsian Evin Hotel in Tehran to celebrate the traditions of Nowruz and Iftar, which have been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Nowruz refers to the Persian New Year while Iftar refers to the ritual of breaking the fast after sunset during Ramadan.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Ieng Srong, Head of the UNESCO Tehran Office, and Mr. Hassan Fattouhi, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO, delivered welcoming remarks emphasizing the significance of intangible cultural heritage. Mr. Hossein Simaei Sarraf, the Minister of Science, Research and Technology, said that the two traditions symbolize the harmony of spirituality and nature, and emphasized the role Iran has played as a center of cultural exchange. The 75-year partnership between UNESCO and Iran was also highlighted in a message from UNESCO's Deputy Director-General, Mr. Xing Qu.
The event was held as part of UNESCO's efforts to promote cultural diversity and sustainable cultural development, and participants reflected that cultural solidarity and mutual respect are the foundation of a sustainable future.
