Miao and Dong People’s Ethnic Costumes featured at China Fashion Week

Traditional ethnic costumes from Guizhou Province were fe http:// atured at China Fashion Week, held from March 21st to 28th, 2025. Forty-five residents from the Miao and Dong autonomous regions participated as models, presenting outfits that combined ethnic techniques such as embroidery, batik (a cloth-dyeing technique), and silverwork with modern designs.
Among the various models, a five-year-old child wearing a costume with Miao traditional embroidery appeared sitting above a piece of farm equipment, resting on the shoulders of a seventy-year-old grandfather, was one of many highlights. This was a recreation of the everyday scene in Guizhou where adults carry children on their shoulders or in baskets. In addition, the stage featured intangible cultural elements unique to Guizhou, such as the flying song, ancient ethnic songs, and lusheng dance from the Miao traditions, as well as the pipa songs from Dong traditions.
Designer Yang Chunlin has held “Village Fashion Shows” in Kaili, Guizhou Province since July 2024, showcasing traditional costumes with local residents every week. So far, more than 430 shows have been held, attracting a cumulative total of 30,000 participants with about 100 million online views. He lamented the gradual loss of traditional crafts and emphasized the balance between the traditional and the modern. Cheng Hao, an inheritor of the batik technique, also participated in this fashion week and presented sustainable designs based on traditional embroidery techniques.
