Talchum, mask dance drama in the Republic of Korea, is a comprehensive art form encompassing dance, song, and theater. It was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in November 2022. It is highly valued for its representation of universal equality and its symbolic connection to the unique cultural identities of various regions.
The Korea Heritage Service released a series of performance videos in February 2025, showcasing reinterpretations of mask dance dramas in collaboration with young dancers. The performances featured traditional mask dances, including the Bongsan Talchum (from Hwanghae-do), the Gangneung Gwanno Mask Dance (a silent masked play from Gangneung, Gangwon-do), the Goseong Ogwangdae (a humorous expression of commoners' lives), and the Andong Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori (a ritual offering prayers for peace and abundant harvests to the village guardian deity).
Aiki, the leader of the dance team HOOK from the Mnet dance competition program ‘Street Woman Fighter’, took inspiration from the lion in the Bongsan Talchum, which punishes evil and protects the village, to create a powerful performance expressing the inner desires and conflicts of humans. Her performance, based on the lion mask encountered at the National Folk Museum, powerfully expressed the inner desires and conflicts of humans. Other reinterpretations, including the Gangneung Gwanno Mask Dance by Yoo Tae-yang of K-pop group SF9, Kim Seol-jin's performance of Goseong Ogwangdae, and Emeut Sound's reinterpretation of Andong Hahoe Byeolsingut, were also unveiled.
