2024 Jeonju International Awards for Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage

The forthcoming autumn will witness Jeonju City serving as the venue for the 2024 Jeonju International Awards for Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage (JIAPICH). This distinguished international award ceremony was instituted to commend individuals or organizations that have demonstrated exemplary leadership in the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage on a global scale. The inaugural JIAPICH took place in 2019, and the imminent event represents its sixth iteration. The primary objective is to acknowledge the selfless contributions of individuals across all domains of intangible cultural heritage and stakeholder in the world's heritage.

Founded on the basis of the Jeonju Declaration on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, this award recognizes individuals, organizations, local communities, experts, administrators, researchers, and NGOs that have demonstrated exemplary efforts in the protection of intangible cultural heritage. Irrespective of nationality, ethnicity, religion, race, age, gender, or political, social, economic, and cultural orientations, this accolade encourages commendable activities in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage within the international community.
A total prize fund of 30,000 USD is allocated among 1 to 5 individuals or teams, with recipients in the year 2023 including the Rural Development Fund of Kyrgyzstan, Art for Refugees in Transition in the United States, and Woodfordia Inc. in Australia. ▶ Eligibility Criteria
Individuals or organizations with significant contributions to the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural heritage activities
(e.g., holders of intangible cultural heritage, organizations, communities, experts, and activists, etc.)
*The definition of intangible cultural heritage follows the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
▶ Award Scale
A total of $30,000 (USD), distributed among 1 to 5 teams.
▶ Selection Procedure
Review of candidate eligibility (May) → Evaluation by jury panel (May to June) → Public verification of selected candidates (June) → Notification of selection results (July) → Announcement of selection results and award ceremony (Scheduled for October).

▶ Evaluation Criteria
(1) Level of contribution to the safeguarding and transmission of intangible cultural heritage activities.
(2) Establishment of the identity of intangible cultural heritage and enhancement of social cohesion and collaboration.
(3) Exemplary cases of activating intangible cultural heritage and promoting community development.

▶ Additional Information
● 2024 JIAPICH Finalists will receive transportation expenses (airfare for international awardees) and accommodation for participation in the award ceremony (*For international awardees affiliated with an organization, arrangements will be made after consultation).
● Even after the award has been conferred, if submitted materials are determined to be false, the award will be revoked.
● Individuals or organizations involved in illegal activities or causing social controversies are restricted from applying.
