The Republic of Korea Elected as Member of UNESCO’s IGC

The Republic of Korea (ROK) was elected as a member of the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The appointment will cover the 2020 to 2024 period. The ROK previously served as a committee member from 2008 and 2012 and between 2014 and2018. A Member State cannot serve two consecutive terms. This appointment marks the third time that the ROK has been elected to the twenty-four-member committee.

For the geographic section, the ROK was competing against India for the Asia-Pacific group. Eighty countries backed the ROK.

The appointment of the ROK was announced at the eighth General Assembly of UNESCO Convention for Safeguarding ICH. The ROK looks forward to participating in discussions and decision-making processes regarding inscriptions and international cooperation.
