Summary |
Carnival of Binche takes place each year in Binche during the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Dating back to approximately the 14th century, it has been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
On the carnival's final day, Gilles, clown-like performers with vibrant dress, wax masks, and wooden footwear, dance in the centre of Binche, to the sound of drums and ward off evil spirits with sticks. Later, wearing large hats adorned with ostrich plumes, march through the town and throw oranges to (and at) the crowd; these oranges, gifts from the Gilles, are considered good luck. |
