Summary | Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval) takes place every year in Cologne. The "fifth season" (carnival season) is declared on November 11 11:11 AM. The carnival spirit is suspended during the Advent and Christmas period, and picks up again on January 6 (Biblical Magi) in the New Year. The time of merrymaking is officially declared on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent, and the week-long street festival ("the crazy days") takes place between Fat Thursday and Ash Wednesday. The highlight of the carnival is Rosenmontag (Rose Monday). The typical greeting during the festival is Kölle Alaaf, which means "Cologne above all!" |
