Central Asian ICH Video and Photo Exhibition to Be Unveiled in 12.COM

From 3 to 9 December 2017, ICHCAP and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea will host the Central Asian ICH Video and Photo Exhibition in the International Convention Center Jeju (ICC Jeju) during the twelfth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Under the theme of “Living Heritage: Five Landscapes”, the exhibition will present photos and videos on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. Some forty videos and seventy photos depicting Central Asian ICH will be open to visitors.

The photos and videos are the results of the Central Asian ICH Video Production Project. ICHCAP teamed up with the four Central Asian countries and Mongolia in the two-year joint project to let people, especially the youth, recognize the importance of ICH safeguarding. Through collaboration with experts, communities, and NGOs in the ICH  field in each country, fifty videos (ten per country) were produced.

As the title “Living Heritage: Five Landscapes” suggests, the exhibition introduces a landscape of life through the lens of ICH, which determines the shape and texture of life. The opening event will take place on 3 December at 17:00 on the fifth floor of the ICC Jeju. The film screening schedule can be checked on site. In addition, ICHCAP will open a PR center near the exhibition space to answer visitors’ questions pertaining to the institution’s ICH safeguarding activities.

Asia-Pacific ICH Video Production Project

With rapid urbanization and globalization, the environment surrounding ICH is also changing fast. Against this backdrop, documentation, which enables us to track changes and developments of ICH, is drawing attention as a means of safeguarding ICH. Producing quality videos that increase visibility of ICH is regarded as especially important in preserving and safeguarding ICH.

Video is an effective medium to capture ICH and a powerful tool for communicating with people. Video production conditions in the Asia-Pacific region, however, are relatively emergent and thus require more support.

ICHCAP is making efforts to produce videos on ICH in cooperation with ICH experts, communities, and NGOs to enhance ICH safeguarding capacities of Member States and expand the visibility of ICH in the region.

ICHCAP will continue its ICH documentation projects in the Asia-Pacific region for the next ten years by expanding the scope from Central Asia and Mongolia to Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and the Pacific.
