From 28 September to 8 October, the city of Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, hosted a vibrant series of cultural and artistic programmes as part of the 2025 Haikou Art Week.
Over the ten-day festival, more than 150 events, including lawn concerts, opera salons and street parades, took place across the city, offering visitors from around the world opportunities to experience local culture firsthand.
One of the highlights was the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fashion Show held on Qilou Old Street, where models captivated audiences by presenting garments inspired by China’s traditional paper-cutting art, Jianzhi (剪纸).
Jianzhi is a traditional Chinese craft that involves cutting intricate patterns from red paper using scissors or a carving knife. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Beyond its decorative beauty, it conveys rich symbolic meanings such as good fortune, prosperity and longevity. In recent years, Jianzhi has found new expressions in modern fields such as fashion, interior design and cultural product development.
A distinctive feature of this year’s Art Week was its emphasis on integrating art into everyday life rather than presenting it as a one-time festive event. Haikou City has created an urban environment where all citizens can easily enjoy cultural experiences in their daily routines by hosting ongoing exhibitions and art programs in libraries, local community spaces, and commercial spaces. This creative energy has helped Haikou promote its intangible cultural heritage more widely, transforming the city into a vibrant and culturally enriched urban space.
