UNESCO, with the support of the European Union (EU), has announced a call for applications for a grant programme to support the safeguarding and revitalization of traditional crafts in Palestine that are currently at risk of disappearing.

The programme aims to assist Palestinian artisans, designers and craft associations in reinterpreting their traditional crafts with contemporary sensibilities and developing them into sustainable forms. The initiative places particular emphasis on revitalizing six traditional crafts that face immediate risk of loss: glass blowing, looming, pottery, mother-of-pearl inlay, olive-wood carving and bamboo crafts. Applicants must present proposals that go beyond mere preservation and demonstrate creativity and future-oriented approaches.

A total of five projects will be selected through this call. Beneficiaries will receive not only financial support but also opportunities for networking, public outreach and the chance to exhibit their works in forthcoming exhibitions. The selected projects are expected to contribute to improving product quality, raising awareness of traditional crafts, creating employment, revitalizing intergenerational knowledge transmission, and further contribute to the development of Palestine’s cultural and creative industries.

Through this initiative, UNESCO and the European Union reaffirmed their joint commitment to protecting Palestine’s rich cultural heritage and to fostering an inclusive, resilient craft ecosystem that connects past and future through design, creativity and collaboration.
