Singapore’s National Heritage Board (NHB) presents Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award

On April 2nd, 2025, the National Heritage Board (NHB) of Singapore presented the Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award to five teams of individuals and organizations for promoting and transmitting traditions and skills to local communities and the younger generation. The award ceremony was held at the National Gallery Singapore, and the awardees received certificates from Edwin Tong, the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.
The award recipients are the rangoli (Indian folk floor art with symmetrical and geometric patterns) artist Vijayalakshmi Mohan, the Malaysian drum “kompang” maker Mohamed Yazid Mohamed Hassan, an exquisite Peranakan-style jewelry artisan Thomis Kwan, Pek Sin Choon, a fourth-generation Chinese tea shop that has been in business since 1925, and Thye Moh Chan, a pastry shop specializing in ‘Tau Sar Piah’, a traditional teochew pastry. They run education programs and workshops for students and the general public, and are leading the way in passing on traditional skills to future generations.
Each winner will receive a $5,000 prize and a project grant of up to $20,000. The National Board expects their activities to contribute to the transmission of the value of intangible cultural heritage to local communities and to the younger generation.
