On January 29, 2025, Asia came alive with a dazzling array of vibrant rituals and celebrations, all designed to dispel misfortune and welcome the prosperous Lunar New Year. In Indonesia, approximately 10 million people—roughly 4% of the population—of Chinese descent celebrated the holiday, known locally as Imlek (Tahun Baru Imlek).

Across the archipelago, each region added its own unique flair to the festivities. Streets were adorned with red lanterns and ornaments, setting the stage for lively parades and traditional performances. Among the highlights were the iconic lion dance, or Barongsai, and dynamic dragon puppet dances. The cities of Bogor and Singkawang were particularly renowned for these performances, with Bogor standing out as a hub for Barongsai artisans and dancers.

A beloved Imlek tradition involved placing red envelopes, known as Angpao, into the mouths of lion or dragon puppets as a symbolic gesture to usher in good fortune for the new year. Families also gathered to enjoy traditional dishes that represent unity and harmony. Popular culinary delights included round, basket-shaped cakes, the glutinous rice snack Onde-Onde, and Lontong Cap Go Meh—a dish of steamed rice wrapped in banana leaves.
