Netflix`s global hit series Squid Game premiered its highly anticipated second season on December 26, 2024. This season introduces a new lineup of survival-style games inspired by traditional Korean folk games, generating a viral buzz on social media. In addition to popular games from Season 1, such as ‘Red Light, Green Light’ and ‘Ddakji,’ Season 2 introduces survival-style adaptations of traditional Korean folk games, including ‘Biseokchigi’(stone flicking), ‘Jegichagi’(shuttlecock kicking), ‘Gonggi’(jacks), ‘Paengi’(spinning top), ‘Hana Bbaegi’(one-out game), and ‘Dunggeulge Dunggeulge’(round-and-round game).

Among the new games, Gonggi has gained widespread attention from international viewers, becoming a hot topic on social media. The game involves using five small objects, such as pebbles or plastic stones. Players toss one stone into the air and quickly pick up another from the ground, progressing through increasingly challenging stages. The final stage involves tossing all five stones into the air, catching them on the back of the hand, and then tossing and catching them again—an impressive display of skill. Players can score up to five points per turn, with the first to reach the target score declared the winner. The fourth episode, featuring Gonggi as its centerpiece, sparked a viral reaction on social media, spreading worldwide under hashtags such as #GonggiGame and #GonggiChallenge.

To fuel the enthusiasm, Netflix released tutorial videos for each game, ensuring that viewers could learn and play along. Capitalizing on the show`s popularity, a convenience store also introduced a limited-edition set of traditional game items (Ddakji, Biseok, Gonggi, Paengi, and Jegi), designed to replicate their appearances in the series. The set quickly became a hit among fans eager to experience the games firsthand.
Additionally, similar games exist in other countries, such as Jacks in the Philippines, Bes Tas in Kazakhstan, and Batu Seremban in Malaysia, creating a sense of cultural connection.
