The Maha Kumbh is going to be held from January 13 to February 26, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Maha Kumbh, one of India`s most iconic Hindu festivals, is recognized as the world`s largest religious gathering and has been designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The festival is held every 12 years and hosted by four cities, including Prayagraj, on a rotating basis. According to Hindu mythology, during a cosmic battle between gods and demons for the Kumbh(pitcher) containing the Amrit(nectar of immortality), drops of the nectar fell at four locations, which became the designated sites for the Maha Kumbh. Millions of devotees congregate at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers to participate in the sacred rite of Shahi Snan(royal bath), believed to cleanse sins and guide the soul toward Moksha(liberation).

The festival features ceremonial baths, cultural events, and discussions on Hindu philosophy and mythology. One of the highlights of the festival, Kalagram is a dedicated cultural zone showcasing traditional arts and heritage, providing devotees and visitors a unique opportunity to experience India’s rich cultural heritage. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat who is the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, officially launched Kalagram at Mahakumb Nagar in Prayagraj on January 12, 2025. Kalagram will host a Ganga Pandal with a capacity of 10,000, along with three additional stages in Areil, Jhunsi, and Triveni areas, each accommodating between 2,000 and 4,000 spectators. Minister Shekhawat noted that over 14,600 artists will perform at Kalagram over the next 45 days. In addition, the Maha Kumbh will feature celestial observation sessions, a book exhibition organized by the Sahitya Akademi, and a cultural documentary produced by the IGNCA.

Minister Shekhawat emphasized that the Maha Kumbh symbolizes unity and devotion, with around 450,000 devotees expected to attend the Mela over the 45 days. He also highlighted the anticipated arrival of 150,000 foreign tourists, emphasizing the global appeal of the festival.
