From September 3 to 6, a high-level delegation led by Mr. Mambetaliev Mirbek, Minister of Culture, Information and Youth Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Ms. Sabira Soltongeldieva, Secretary-General of the National Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic for UNESCO, visited Korea at the invitation of the UNESCO ICHCAP (hereinafter “the Centre”).

The Centre serves as the implementing agency for the Official Development Assistance (ODA) project supported by the Korea Heritage Service (Administrator: Heo Min), titled “Promotion of the Cultural Tourism Industry through Strengthening the Traditional Craft Techniques and Digital Marketing Capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic (20232026).” The project seeks to foster the sustainable development of Kyrgyz traditional crafts by integrating modern perspectives. This visit was organized as part of the ongoing project.

During their stay, the delegation attended the opening of the special exhibition “Kyrgyz Kiyiz Kasieti: The Essence of Kyrgyz Felt”, held in conjunction with the 2025 Cheongju Craft Biennale. The exhibition highlights the excellence of Kyrgyz traditional crafts, while the visit also served as an occasion to encourage participants of the Korean residency program for Kyrgyz artisans and the capacity-building program for cultural mediators.

On September 5, Kygryz Minister of Culture held a meeting with the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service at the National Palace Museum of Korea. The Minister expressed his appreciation and positive assessment of the ODA project currently underway, and both sides reached a consensus to further strengthen cooperation in the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage, including traditional crafts, between Korea and the Kyrgyz Republic. The Minister also proposed Korea’s active participation in the academic conference of the 6th World Nomad Games, to be hosted by the Kyrgyz Republic in 2026, and extended an official invitation to the Administrator.

Additionally, Minister visited the National Museum of Korea, where he viewed representative Korean cultural heritage collections, including the renowned gallery “Room of Quiet Contemplation,” and held talks with Director Yoo Hong-jun. Both parties expressed agreement on expanding exchanges and cooperation in the fields of exhibitions and education among museums.

This visit significantly contributed to deepening mutual understanding in the field of cultural heritage and reinforced international cooperation for the sustainable development of intangible cultural heritage, including traditional crafts, between the two countries.
