The 2024 Kyrgyz-Korea Traditional Crafts Symposium Concludes Successfully

ICHCAP (Director-General Kim Ji-sung) and the Korea Heritage Service (KHS, Administrator Choi Eung-chon) held a Kyrgyz-Korea Traditional Crafts Symposium titled `Language of Tradition, Contemporary Resonance: Modern Applications of Kyrgyz and Korean Traditional Crafts` in Cheongju on Thursday, November 21, in cooperation with the Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation. The symposium brought together approximately 50 traditional craft experts and artisans from both Korea and the Kyrgyz Republic to explore ways to modernize and revitalize Kyrgyz traditional crafts.
The symposium featured presentations by Dinara Chochunbaeva from the Central Asian Crafts Support Association`s Resource Centre in Republic of Kyrgyz on `Characteristics of Kyrgyz Traditional Crafts and the Meaning of Sociocultural Changes in Modern Society`, Rheem Mi-sun, Artistic Director of the 2024 Gyeonggi Ceramic Biennale on `Global Craft Trends and Application of Traditional Crafts`, and Jin Hyo-seung, Director of Ilsangyeobaek on `Case Studies of Modern Applications of Korean Traditional Crafts`.
In particular, eight Kyrgyz craft artists who have been participating in the residency program since September shared their experiences and thoughts on modern applications while discussing similarities and differences between the two countries` traditional crafts, focusing on the intersection of Korean and Kyrgyz crafts.
The subsequent panel discussion, moderated by former Korea National University of Heritage Professor Choi Kong-ho, featured in-depth discussions on modern applications and potential collaboration in traditional crafts between the two countries. Based on insights shared by Kyrgyz craft artists participating in the residency program, the discussion and Q&A session emphasized the essential role of various stakeholders, including mediators, in the modern inheritance and development of traditional crafts. The symposium was conducted with consecutive interpretation between Korean and Kyrgyz, and was also live-streamed on YouTube, allowing participants from the Kyrgyz Republic to attend virtually.
This exchange, where experts from both countries gathered to discuss modern applications of traditional crafts and share field experiences, is expected to strengthen networking and cooperation between the two countries, presenting a sustainable development model for traditional crafts.
