The 1st Information Officers’ Capacity Building Workshop on ichLinks Online Platform, hosted by the National Library and Archives of Bhutan and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP), concluded with great enthusiasm in Thimphu, Bhutan, from October 7 to 8, 2024. This workshop provided a dynamic space for dialogue and learning, where Information Officers designated by Partner Organizations explored new paths for data management and actively discussed innovative strategies for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH).
Held at the Bhutan National Library and Archives, the workshop opened new possibilities for global collaboration in ICH safeguarding. Information Officers from 10 countries strengthened their data management skills by learning about UNESCO’s heritage safeguarding strategies and practicing with the latest features of the ichLinks platform. In particular, the presentations on content creation and curation sparked strong interest among participants, laying an important foundation for future ICH safeguarding through shared knowledge of practical data management.
On the second day, participants conducted a hands-on field exercise, capturing detailed footage of traditional Bhutanese woodblock carving and printing processes. They documented the delicate craftsmanship and deep cultural significance of these practices, gaining valuable experience in filming and editing techniques. Participants then uploaded the footage to the platform and learned how to systematically organize and edit digitized materials, underscoring the critical importance of digitally documenting ICH.
Another highlight of the workshop was the networking session, where information officers freely shared their experiences in data management and safeguarding intangible heritage, while actively discussing future collaboration opportunities. The innovative ideas that emerged are expected to drive the further development of the platform and global data cooperation.
This workshop made significant contributions to establishing ichLinks as a core tool for ICH safeguarding in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants from various countries not only enhanced their heritage management skills but also shared diverse and innovative ideas for advancing the platform. ICHCAP plans to build on these achievements by continuously improving the platform`s functions and expanding the global network to lead the future of ICH safeguarding.
This workshop marks a new beginning for the future of digital innovation and heritage protection, and the ichLinks platform is expected to play a key role in safeguarding ICH worldwide.
