2022 Smithsonian Folklife Festival to be Started on June 22
The 2022 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will be held at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from June 22 to 27 and from June 30 to July 4.
The festival, which has been held every year since 1967, starting from the American Independence Day, will serve as a catalyst for intercultural understanding and exchange by operating various programs for visitors that can stimulate cultural curiosity in cooperation with cultural heritage stakeholders and communities this year.
The organizer, the Smithsonian Folk and Cultural Heritage Center, has been planning events to experience related traditional cultural heritage by selecting countries, regions, and special themes every year. This year’s country and theme are ‘United Arab Emirates’ and ‘Earth Optimism’.
This festival is titled “United Arab Emirates: Living Landscapes | Living Memories,” which will provide visitors with a variety of experiences to explore the past and present traditions of the United Arab Emirates to connect communities with a sustainable future.
Demonstration events such as pearl divers’ singing old labor songs, ancient irrigation techniques, and beekeeping techniques are prepared, and tourists can directly or indirectly experience the traditional culture of the United Arab Emirates, by participating in various programs available, such as weaving and ceramic crafts, food experiences, and movie screenings. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival Marketplace will also be operated online, where you can purchase creative crafts made by world-class artisans.
In addition, in the ‘Earth Optimism × Folklife Studio’ session organized as part of the Earth Optimism × Folklife program, leaders from various fields, including scientists and environmentalists, will discuss the most pressing problems and innovative solutions facing our planet.
